This space is for me to participate in PLCMC's Learning 2.0 program.

Flickr Uploader

BTW, I love the Flickr Uploader utility. You may not be able to install it on a library staff PC, but if you do any flickring at home, it is a fabulous time-saver.

PLCMCL2 tagging with view from the ML Ref Desk

I would say that I have a good grasp of tagging flickr photos. Just for the sake of our Learning 2.0 project, I took some pictures of Main's Reference Desk, and tagged them with "plcmcl2" and other related tags, just as a demonstration.

You may already know this, but putting a phrase in quotation marks allows that phrase to be one tag. For instance "Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County" would be 7 seperate tags without the quotation marks.

Another neat Flickr feature is Notes. Click on the photo here to get into Flickr, then mouse over that picture, and you will see what I mean.

Ciao!

Color MashUps

OK, the concept of "mashups" are new to me, but I really like the Color Fields Colr Pickr application.

It is through this particular mashup that I am beginning to understand the power of tags in Flickr.

At a glance, it looks like the color tags are hexcodes. Gosh, I have not used those in awhile! Probably since I got away from hardcoding HTML...does anyone do *that* anymore?!

Success! I have figured out how to integrate Flickr photos into blogs! Thanks for your help Natalie!

Flickr

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

Making Friends with Flickr

All right, I have not give up on Flickr. I have been working on putting some of my "vacation" photos online with Flickr.

I especially like the Flickr Uploadr tool, which I installed at home.

Flickr does seem to be a very flexible product. I am still getting my mind around using Flickr for social networking, though. I linked my photos to other Flickr "Groups" associated with the SCA.

I still have to figure out how to pull photos from my Flickr into my blog.

If you have any questions about my medieval hobby, just leave me comments somewhere.

Limitations of Flickr

Yes, Flickr is a cool photo sharing/social networking tool. However, I was a bit startled to figure out some major limitations pretty quickly:

1) "Upload limit is measured in bandwidth, or "throughput", not actual storage space." You get 20MB per MONTH. What this means to me is that I have to downsize my pictures before uploading them. I uploaded 6 pictures that were straight out of the camera, and used 27% of my space for the month.

2) You are limited to 3 photo sets in the free account. I don't know about you, but I take a lot of photos, and I like to organize them. What this means to me is that I will not really be able to use Flickr unless I purchase a premium account.

3) Flickr is now a Yahoo product, so it seems. However, what I have traditionally used, Yahoo Photos, remains available, but Yahoo is talking about a major upgrade, and I have to wonder if the Flickr model is a part of that upgrade. Stay tuned.

I will probably finish uploading some general photos to my Flickr account, and I will post them here.

I am not a Flickr convert, though...

Visual Searching

For the Emerging Technologies Committee meeting, I prepared a presentation on Visual Searching Tools. What I think is especially relevant here in the library is that all of our Ebscohost databases have a Visual Search option. Ebsco uses Grokker technology for their search results display tool.

Here are my notes of Visual Searching.

Online Databases

In Library-land, I believe that our online databases are a key tool in our Learning 2.0 toolbox. So, I am going to use this blog not only to record my Learning 2.0 activities, but to talk about the golden nuggets and shiny gems I find this way in my day-to-day stumbling around.

For instance, I have always liked Electric Library for obscure academic information. I will post the next interesting thing I find there. This is just my maiden post to get my library blogging journey underway.

In the meantime, here is one of my older blogs from my last trip to India.
